Dr. Rita Brusca-Vega, Associate Professor of Special Education, is a former teacher of students with mild and severe disabilities at the elementary and high school levels and has over 30 years experience in higher education teaching graduate and undergraduate students in special education. She has extensive experience in federal and state grants for preparing teachers to serve English learners with disabilities and students with severe disabilities and for facilitating the inclusion of students with disabilities into general education settings. Her latest publications are a chapter on autism spectrum disorders for school counselors and an article describing a joint teacher development program for science and special educators on creating inclusive classrooms. Rita is a long-time active member of the Council for Exceptional Children and is on the Illinois State Board of Education subcommittee on English learners with special needs. She is Program Chair for the special education licensure/graduate programs, Mild and Intense Intervention. She and her husband, Flavio, have two adopted daughters from Guatemala and live in Munster, IN.
