Members of the Purdue University Northwest community celebrated the formal opening of the Couple and Family Therapy Center on April 20.
The center, located at 7030 Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond, includes two therapy rooms with one-way mirrors and five additional therapy rooms, two conference rooms, and faculty offices. All therapy rooms are video-equipped and contain bug-in-the-ear technology to assist in training therapists who are students in the Marriage and Family Therapy Master’s Program.
Peter Visclosky, U.S. congressman from Northwest Indiana, cited the center’s work as an example of the university’s effort to improve the quality of life in the area.
“I appreciate what you are doing to help others,” Visclosky said.
Provost Ralph Mueller said the center’s work was “exemplar” of the three characteristics associated with successful PNW programs: innovation, impact and improvement.
Chancellor Thomas Keon called the Marriage and Family Therapy program “a star” on the PNW campus and added that the new facility was a nicer and warmer place than its previous location on 169thStreet.
Dr. Seda Gulvas, director of the Couple and Family Therapy Center, said services provided are based on income and family size.
“We never want cost to be the reason that someone does not get the services that they need,” she said.
Dr. Megan Murphy, director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, said that the new Center provides students with state-of-the-art training facilities, which prepares them to work with clients who are members of the Hammond and surrounding communities.
Dr. Joseph Wetchler, a professor in the program, said that all graduates find employment in within three months of graduation and many pursue doctoral study. The program admits seven students each year and has a cap of 27 students because of the supervision requirements by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education.
