History Matters presentation - The Many Adventures of Blandina and Justina
Westville/LSF/2491401 US-421, Westville, IN 46391Westville, INDr. Mary Beth Fraser Connolly will give a talk about Digital History, Nuns, Billy the Kid, and Italian immigrants in Cincinnati in LSF 249 from 12:30 to 1:30pm April 9.
The archives of Catholic women religious are full of records which are deeply connected to women’s history and American history largely. Charged with preserving their history, religious congregations have moved into the digital age and joined the digital humanities conversation. While scholars can utilize these records for research, they also can bring them into their classrooms to enliven their discussions of the past. This presentation explores one example: Sisters Justina and Blandina Segale, whose missions took them to the American Southwest in the late 1860s, where Sister Blandina encountered and faced down the notorious outlaw, Billy the Kid, and to the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio from 1897 – 1930, where they served Italian immigrants. This event is open to the public.
