The Fight for Equality: Issues the Trans Community Faces
Hammond/CLO 2392200 169th St Hammond, IN 46323Hammond, IN2199892645This is a public event.
Sophia Gibson, a PNW alumna who earned her bachelor's degree in English, will discuss employment discrimination, violence against trans people, especially Black trans women, and government policies that legalize bigotry against trans people in a presentation entitled, “The Fight for Equality: Issues the Trans Community Faces" on October 23 at 12:30 pm in CLO 239 (Hammond campus).Ms. Gibson argues that codifying laws and policies such as the ban on transgender people in the military and federal regulations that allow health care providers to deny care to trans people foster a culture of violence. Now, the US Supreme Court is considering whether trans people, along with lesbians, gays and bisexuals, can be fired solely because of their sexuality. Ms. Gibson will present the case for trans people’s human and civil rights, focusing particularly on trans women of color, who comprise 82 percent of trans people known to have been murdered in 2018.
Sponsored by the Purdue Intersectional Feminist Alliance (PIFA), an inclusive student club promoting feminist anti-racist learning and social change.
