The Purdue University Graduate School reserves the right to require official transcripts and/or academic documents at any time during the admissions process.
Degree Seeking Applicants need to upload copies of official transcripts and/or academic documents from each institution attended in the Education Background section of the online application. Make sure to include the university’s grade scale, which usually appears on the reverse of the transcript. If personal identifying information such as a student identification number or social security number appear on the document, REMOVE THIS INFORMATION from your electronic version of your document or mark out the information in black ink before scanning your document. Follow this link for tips about uploading your transcripts into the Education Background section of your application. If requested by the graduate program or if you are recommended for admission, you must submit official transcripts. If you are accepted submit an official transcript for every institution of higher education attended to the Graduate Studies Office.
If you are applying as a Graduate Certificate or Non degree applicant, you must provide evidence of a baccalaureate degree. This may be a transcript, a copy of the diploma, or a letter from the college or university verifying the degree. Teacher License applicants must provide an official transcript from the college or university where your baccalaureate degree was received.
You must submit a transcript for every institution of higher education attended. If a transcript is not in English, you must provide an English translation certified by the college or university which issued it.
You will need to provide official transcripts and/or academic records at the request of the graduate program or if you are admitted and choose to enroll. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. Official transcripts and/or English translations must be mailed directly from a Registrar’s office to the Office of Graduate Studies. You can choose to send the transcripts yourself, but the transcripts must be in an envelope sealed by the Registrar. Official documents should be submitted to:

The Office of Graduate Studies also accepts electronic transcripts from accredited U.S. colleges and universities sent via eSCRIP-SAFE, Docufide, Parchment Exchange or directly from the accredited U.S. college and university. The Office of Graduate Studies will also accept electronic transcripts from colleges and universities in India via TrueCopy Credentials or Parchment Exchange. The transcript must be sent to email@example.com. The Office of Graduate Studies does not accept electronic transcripts from international colleges or universities except for those noted in the pilot program above. Transcripts will not be returned.
- Degree-Seeking Applicants: If you are applying to a graduate degree program, you must upload your transcript into the online application. Your transcripts must be from each college or university you have attended, including evidence of a baccalaureate degree awarded. If requested by the graduate program or if you are admitted and choose to enroll, you must submit official transcripts and/or academic documents directly to the Office of Graduate Studies. If you are currently studying for a baccalaureate degree, you may be admitted conditionally for your first semester pending proof of completion of your undergraduate degree. You will be required to submit a final transcript indicating that the baccalaureate degree has been awarded prior to being able to register for your second semester of graduate work.
- Re-entry Applicants: If you are seeking re-entry to a degree program and you attended another college or university since you last attended graduate school at Purdue, you must upload a transcript of that study into the online application. If requested by the graduate program or if you are admitted and choose to enroll, you must submit official transcripts and/or academic documents directly to the Office of Graduate Studies.
- Certificate Applicants: If you are applying for a graduate certificate, you must upload evidence of a baccalaureate degree. Some graduate certificate programs require additional documentation. Please refer to the Graduate Program Requirements Web page for PNW for specific details.
- Teacher License: If you are applying for the teacher license classification, you must upload a transcript from the college or university where your baccalaureate degree was awarded. If you are currently studying for a baccalaureate degree, you will later be required to submit a document that verifies the degree has been awarded. Your transcript may be uploaded into the online application. If requested by the graduate program or if you are admitted and choose to enroll, you must submit official transcripts and/or academic documents directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
- Non Degree Applicants: If you are applying for non-degree classification, you must upload evidence of a baccalaureate degree. This may be a transcript, a copy of the diploma, or a letter from the college or university verifying the degree.
Depending upon your field of study, you may be required to take one or more standardized tests. Standardized tests are uniform in nature and are administered and scored in the same fashion for all students by organizations not affiliated with Purdue University.
Only test scores received in the Graduate Studies Office directly from the testing facility are considered official.
Typically these tests are completed in your senior year before you begin applying for graduate study, but always be sure to check with the Purdue program to which you may apply in order to determine its specific requirements and deadlines.
Common standardized tests that may be required for admission include:
- The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) has a general test component, which is most often required for graduate admission. Some programs will also require the completion of a GRE Subject Test that focuses on a specific field of study. Although the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not a Graduate School requirement, many graduate programs require this test. Please check the Graduate Program Requirements Web page for this requirement. For information and test dates visit www.gre.org. Purdue University Northwest’s code for the GRE application is 1638.
- The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is often required for individuals interested in management or other business-related programs.
- The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) evaluate a person’s level of English proficiency for individuals whose native language is not English.
International degree-seeking applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores for Purdue University Graduate School admission.
The Graduate School accepts valid TOEFL scores earned through the paper-based test and Internet-based test. Institutional TOEFL scores (ITP) are not accepted. The minimum paper-based test score required for admission is 550. The minimum Internet-based test scores required for admission are the following:
- Writing 18
- Speaking 18
- Listening 14
- Reading 19
- Total 80
Note that in addition to required minimum scores for writing, speaking, listening, and reading, the Graduate School also requires a minimum overall score that is higher than the minimums for the four area tests combined. Applicants must meet or exceed each of the five scores (listed above) for admission to the Graduate School. Some graduate programs require higher minimum scores. Please check with your program of interest for additional requirements.
Only official TOEFL scores received directly from Educational Testing Service are acceptable. For further information, visit TOEFL.org. TOEFL score reports are only valid for two years. Purdue University Northwest’s code for the TOEFL application is 001638.
The Graduate School accepts International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test scores in addition to the TOEFL. The following minimums are required for admission:
An overall band score of 6.5 Listening 6.0 Reading 6.5 Writing 5.5 Speaking 6.0

Statement of Purpose
Unless otherwise noted within the Graduate Program Requirements Web page, each degree-seeking applicant is expected to complete a Statement of Purpose.
A statement of purpose is an essay of approximately 300-500 words explaining your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue Northwest, and your professional plans, career goals, and research interests. You may also explain any irregularities or special circumstances applicable to your background, and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, scholarly publications, and/or professional history. Some programs may require a specific format.
Unless otherwise noted within the Graduate Program Requirements Web page, three (3) letters of recommendation are required for degree-seeking applicants.
When you create an online application to the Purdue Graduate School, you will have the opportunity to enter the names of your recommendation providers. Once you click “Send to Recommender” your recommendation providers will receive an email with instructions on submitting their recommendation online.
The Purdue University Graduate School strongly encourages you to provide an email address affiliated with your recommenders’ academic institution, professional organization, or employer. Once the online recommendation is submitted, the graduate program to which you applied will have access to view your online recommendation.

Not all programs use the default form above. Please consult the Graduate Program Requirements Web page for Hammond and Westville for recommendation letter requirements. If your program indicates that it uses a separate recommendation form, a link to that form will be provided by the graduate program.
After submitting your application, your application status page will indicate the payment due. Click the link Submit Payment to begin the payment process. (Your application may be submitted without payment, but it will not be processed until payment is made for degree-seeking and certificate students).
You must pay your application fee online with your credit card. Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards are accepted and processed using a secured online payment system. Your application will not be processed until your nonrefundable application fee has been paid. Our application fee is $60 (U.S. dollars) for domestic applications and $75 (U.S. dollars) for international applicants.
There is no fee for the non-degree application.
How to access your decision letter and reply to your offer of admission.
- Log in to the Graduate School’s online application system
- Under Status Update, click View Update to access your decision letter
- On page one of your letter, click the link “Click here to submit your response to the offer of admission.”
- Complete and submit the form.
- Your response will appear on your application status page.
