Why choose Purdue Northwest?
The Undergraduate Nursing program is designed to develop nurses with expertise in evidence-based nursing practice and a thorough understanding of quality and safety that nursing leaders require. Our program develops a nursing workforce ready to meet changing healthcare demands.
The program is uniquely designed for ease of entry and progression for students who are new to college or those with previous degrees. Students directly admitted from high school get started with nursing courses in their first semester. Students with a previous baccalaureate degree in another major are eligible for our accelerated second-degree program and earn a BSN in just 18 months. Our online RNBSN program allows working registered nurses the opportunity to finish their degree in as little as 16 months.
We are dedicated to providing a quality education! PNW College of Nursing has been designated as a NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education for the second time! The recognition is given to nursing programs that demonstrate visionary leadership and environments of inclusive excellence that nurture the next generation of a strong and diverse nursing workforce. Purdue Northwest College of Nursing graduates are well prepared to pass the NCLEX state board exam for licensure. Our first time pass rates are exceptionally high!
Evidence-based teaching and nursing practice is at the heart of what we do! Students enjoy the benefits of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Collaboration and a dedicated library scientist for our online nursing programs. Throughout the curricula, faculty integrate this concept to ultimately prepare students to apply the best available evidence in their concluding NUR 49800 Capstone courses.
Clinical Assistant Professors Jodi Allen and Corinne Djuric, both Certified Family Nurse Practitioners, had a mission to help the underserved clients who visit the Sojourner Truth House (STH) in Gary. While following evidence-based guidelines and performing person-centered care, they keep in mind the challenges that their clients face. Empowering these clients to take ownership of their health and connecting them to primary care providers has improved their overall health.
Allen and Djuric are working toward an even better health care environment at Sojourner Truth House. In the near future, they hope to gain the ability to perform point of care testing and treatments. They have been politically active with Indiana State Senators Todd Young and Representative Pete Visclosky to push toward allowing APRNS to practice to the full extent of their certification in the state, thus allowing APRNs to prescribe to the clients without a collaborative practice agreement.
Allen and Djuric are change agents in Northwest Indiana, motivating students to make a difference using their professional skills with vulnerable populations. Undergraduate and graduate students work closely with Allen and Djurcic at Sojourner Truth House (STH). This experience has opened the students’ eyes to the needs of homeless individuals, and has shown them the complexity of both treating and getting treatment for health issues.
