College of Business
Jane Mutchler, Dean
Distinctive programs that incorporate active learning and produce high-quality, impactful outcomes drive the education the College of Business provides. For example . . .
Our “COB Experience,” a four-course sequence of one-credit hour, professional development undergraduate courses, culminates in a service learning project with Junior Achievement, whereby students and employers partner to deliver a workshop to area middle and high schools. The program has earned two prestigious recognitions: the Curriculum Innovation Award from the Mid-American Business Deans Association and the Innovations that Inspire Award from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the international accrediting body for business colleges.
Center For Career Management
Our Center for Career Management facilitates effective student career development and successful campus recruiting for employers through workshops, mock interviews, one-on-one career counseling, and recruiting and networking events. The result? The number of our students completing internships this spring increased 50 percent from a year ago. Even higher has been the spike in the percentage of employers posting jobs for our business majors.
Our Advertising Campaigns course, taught by Clinical Assistant Professor Matt Hanson, provides a hands-on opportunity for students to compete against other student teams developing a multi-million-dollar marketing campaign for a major corporate client, such as Ocean Spray in 2018. PNW students have placed first or second in district competition seven times in recent years and won the National Student Advertising Competition in 2015, beating out teams from some of the top business schools nationally.
Collaborative Problem Solving
Through our Center for Business and Economic Development Solutions (CBEDS), directed by Clinical Assistant Professor Russell Mulligan, faculty members and students collaborate on solving problems for local businesses. Projects this year have included developing an accounting system for a lawn-care business, a feasibility study for a hotel site, and marketing plans for various small businesses. Additionally, our two-year Professional MBA Program has been enhanced to include four practice experiences, including, this year, a local restaurant marketing plan and analysis of loan applicants’ financial statements for a regional bank.
